Are We Subsidising Environmentally Damaging Airplanes?
There is a real issue about the environmental damage caused by our new found freedom to fly. This is not just the damage caused by the airports needed to support our growth in flight, but the damage caused by the aircraft themselves. Figures show that flying is the least environmentally friendly way to travel.
I have raised these issues in parliament, especially a we have a local airport near Loughborough. East Midlands Airport provides jobs, economic growth and noise and pollution.
One of the greatest barriers to acting is the simple fcat that any environmental tax policy introduced unilatrally in the UK, for example on fuel, would lead to evasion of taxation through aircraft filling up before coming to the UK.
