European Constitution
Now that the draft constitution has been agreed it is time to discuss the issues - not just the fine print. I hope to take on board the comments of constituents and repsond via these pages.
I have not been a supporter of a referendum on the issue of the European Constitution for a number of reasons. Even now that the Prime Minister has stated he will hold such a referendum, if the Constitution is agreed this year, I still do not think it is necessary or particularly desirable.
However, the reality is that now it has been promised, supported by most mainstream political parties and although my reservations still stand I will obviously not block the progress of a Bill to set up the referendum in the Commons.
At least by taking on the myth makers in the Euro sceptic camp we can have a proper grown up debate about the central issue of Europe. (That is if you don't read a Murdoch newspaper)
