Flooding in Sileby and the Soar Valley

As soon as the village centre was flooded a few years ago I arranged a public meeting to bring together residents with the local council and Environment Agency. Since that date I have kept up constant pressure for action to be taken. I am pleased to say that this has had some effect.

Following remedial work carried out after the floods of '98 and '99 no more serious flooding has taken place in the village centre. The village escaped flooding during the worst ever flooding this country has seen in recent times in 2000.

Since then a £250,000 scheme in the village has been put in place, as well as action in Cossington. I am assured by the experts that this should remove a great deal of the risk, and the evidence so far has been encouraging.

I remain vigilant and am pleased that, following the withdrawal of the Severn Trent Agency, Charnwood Borough Council still retains the acapacity to deal with serious flooding in the area.

It is also, of course the County Council's responsibility to deal with the flooding of highways, and to lead Emergency Planning related to major flooding emergencies.
