Reed Seeks Improvements for Disabled Rail Passengers In Loughborough
Andy Reed MP is working to improve facilities at Loughborough’s Railway Station for disabled users. The station is the fourth busiest in the East Midlands, serving an expanding university town. One hundred and twenty eight trains call there each day, with over 1.3 million passengers passing through during 2005. However there is currently no disabled access to platforms at which two thirds of the trains call.
Reed who is Secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Midland Mainline Group stated “clearly the current position is unsustainable, as disability access is so restrictive”. He added “I want to see clear improvements for disabled people at Loughborough station so they have easy access to trains, and travel with minimum hindrance.
Reed has raised the matter formally in the Commons with Parliamentary Questions, and written representations to Ministers during February. He concluded “with the Parkway Station due to be built to the North of Loughborough during the next few years, I will be working with the Railway Development Society Limited, East Midlands Passenger Transport Users Forum (EMPTUF) & other passenger user groups in order to keep the disability access issue high profile.
