Reed Supports Phones 4 Africa Campaign

Loughborough MP Andy Reed is actively supporting the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Communications and Nigeria campaign to donate old mobile phones to Africa.

There are 75% of adults and young people in the United Kingdom who own a mobile phone and every hour 1712 mobile phones are upgraded in the UK alone despite having a lifespan of 10 years they are only kept for 18 months on average.

Furthermore it’s estimated that if all mobile-users in the UK threw their old phones it would have the effect of land filling £650,000 worth of silver a year, not to mention the toxic chemicals that would leak into the environment.

Reed therefore is keen not only to help protect the environment but also help developing nations improve the lines of communications in Africa.

Reed stated “wider access to communications in Africa has proven to be an important element in tackling poverty. Having a phone means having a voice and that is the best way to help people out of poverty”.

He added “I want to do as much practically as I can to help and will be collecting old mobile ‘phones at my constituency office in Loughborough, for any of my constituents that want to donate them”.

Any Loughborough constituent can bring their old mobile ‘phone to Reed’s constituency office at 21 Fennel Street. Reed will then arrange for the phones to be forwarded to the campaign’s headquarters.

Alternatively people can send their old mobiles to a freepost address – Freepost Fonebak Vodafone Africa.
