The Sustainable Communities Bill

A number of people have lobbied me to support this Bill. Whilst I agree with much of what the Bill contains, I am less sure that it offers the only, or indeed the best answer to the questions raised by this debate.

My response to the requests for support is as follows:

Firstly, as a PPS in the Treasury Committee I am unable to sign any Early Day Motions (EDMs).

Secondly, I did not stay in Parliament for the second reading of the Bill (on Friday 19th Jan) for a number of reasons. Whilst most people agree with the sentiments of this Bill, there are different views on how its designed outcomes can be achieved. I have always prioritised constituency work above private business on Fridays, having spent Monday till Thursday in Parliament. Whilst there are many worthy Bills, those that are widely supported on all sides of the House and are competent are likely to make good progress.

I am pleased this Bill has generated debate and look forward to its sentiments being delivered through the Local Government Bill already going through Parliament.
